Veta Louise (Duncan-Nichols) Johnson, 88, of Cherokee Village, Ark. passed away Feb. 28, 2022. She was born Aug. 17, 1933 in Poughkeepsie, Arkansas. Her parents, Fred and Ruth (Duncan) Nichols, and two sisters, Georgia (Nichols) Simpson and Jean (Nichols) Schnoetzinger, preceded her in death.
Veta graduated from the Evening Shade School in 1951. She became a member of the Church of Christ as a teenager and was baptized in the Strawberry River near Evening Shade. She was an active member of the Hardy Church of Christ for many years.
Veta was also an active member of the Cherokee Village Kiwanis Club, the Sharp County Historical Society, and the Cherokee Village Historical Society. She worked at several different places and retired from the City of Ash Flat in 2003.
Survivors include her two sons, Dr. Tony Johnson and his wife, Denise of Little Rock and Judge Mark R. Johnson and his wife, Margretta of Hardy; grandchildren: Skylar, Sasha, Piper, Parker, Phoebe; great-grandchildren: Harper and Bridger; one sister, Virginia Nichols Hume and her husband, James of Wichita, Kansas; a special friend, Betsy (McKenzie) Waugh; many nieces and nephews as well as numerous other relatives and good friends.
Veta loved spending time with family. She wrote many letters and stories to the grands of all their visits to Granny’s house and when she visited them.
Services were held Sat., March 5, 2022 in the chapel of Tri-County Funeral Home at Highland with Dunlap, Don House, and Johnny Carter officiating. Burial was in Evening Shade/Sharp Cemetery.
Pallbearers were nephews and cousins: Brent and Brian Hume, Bruce Simpson, Danny and Garrett Duncan, Danny Sanders, Randy, Kenny, Kevin and Keith Nichols; friends: Tom McKenzie, Dennis Waugh, Asher Qualls, Jake Norris, Dennis Horton, Dewayne Powell, John Roberts, and Dick Pitchford.
