Wendall Smith Court at Salem was officially dedicated Feb. 2 in Salem. The late and well loved coach’s family, former coaches and friends were all present for the ceremony. Smith’s daughter, Ashley, who is married to Salem Head Girl’s Coach Josh Bateman said, “Last night was so special and it was a perfect ceremony celebrating and honoring my dad! We are so thankful for everyone who helped make it happen, and for it everyone who was able to be there. It warmed our hearts to see so many of Daddy’s former players, fellow coaches, and referees. Daddy would have felt undeserving of such an honor, which is a testament to his character. When the younger generations ask about the name on the floor, his legacy will live on as all of the wonderful, funny, and heartwarming stories of Dad’s character are shared.” Smith’s son, Shane, who also coaches at Salem was present with his family at the service.
