EDITOR’S NOTE: This is an update to a story published in our July 29 issue. At that time, a probable cause affidavit detailing the allegations against Scott Ewing had been filed, but court documents outlining the basis for the charges against Summer Wolfe-Ewing were not yet available. Because of the disturbing nature of the allegations involving children, the Spring River Chronicle will not publish unnecessary graphic details. However, the following information is being reported to explain the basis for the charges that were not detailed in the original article.

Original Story

$1 million cumulative bond set on Evening Shade couple arrested for abuse of three children

On July 23, Summer Wolfe-Ewing told Ash Flat Patrolman Daniel Murphy at Murphy USA that her husband, Scott Ewing, had been abusing her and three children.

After dispatch was notified, Sharp County Deputy Austin Carpenter met Summer at White River Medical Center. She alleged that Scott Ewing had sexually assaulted a female child, beaten a male child, struck him in the head with a metal cup, and physically abused a third child.

One of the victims told investigators the abuse began about two years earlier. Summer initially said the most recent incident of physical abuse had occurred several days earlier but later changed her statement, saying it had happened that day.

Carpenter interviewed the children in Summer’s presence, except for the female child, who was being treated by emergency room staff. Murphy photographed the children’s injuries and contacted the Arkansas Department of Human Services. Carpenter also photographed Sunmer’s injuries and forwarded the photographs to the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division. He provided Summer with information for Safe Night Ministries, a local shelter for battered women.

According to Carpenter’s report, one male child had bruising that investigators described as consistent with a belt buckle on his arms, extensive bruising across his chest, abdomen, back, arms and legs, and puncture wounds on his back.

Summer had injuries to her neck, arm and ear. A 12-year-old female child had injuries to her jaw, cheek, and both legs. The third child had no visible injuries but, according to medical records, complained of pain in the neck and jaw.

Scott Ewing and Wolfe-Ewing were arrested July 24, and booked into the Sharp County Detention Center.

At the time of the original story, a probable cause affidavit detailing the allegations against Scott Ewing had been filed. However, court documents outlining the basis for Wolfe-Ewing’s charges had not yet been filed, making it unclear what evidence led investigators to seek charges against her.

Scott Ewing was booked on charges of first-degree domestic battery, a Class B felony; second-degree domestic battery, a Class C felony; first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor, a Class D felony; third-degree domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor; rape, a Class Y felony; permitting abuse of a child, a Class B felony; sexually grooming a child, a Class D felony; and sexual indecency with a child, a felony.

The investigation involves the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division, Sharp County Sheriff’s Office, Ash Flat Police Department and Arkansas Department of Human Services.

Both defendants appeared for bond hearings Mon., July 27. Scott Ewing’s bond was set at $750,000 cash or professional and Summer Wolfe-Ewing’s was set at $250,000 cash or professional bond.

UPDATE!!

Additional court records now provide details regarding the allegations that led to the charges against Wolfe-Ewing.

According to the report, Sharp County Lt. Cham Buchanan responded to White River Medical Center in Batesville on July 23 following Summer’s initial report in Ash Flat. Buchanan responded after receiving notification of the alleged physical and sexual abuse of children, which prompted further investigation.

Shortly afterward, Jennifer Rhodes of the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division arrived at the hospital and interviewed Summer regarding the allegations. According to the affidavit, she waived her Miranda rights and agreed to speak with the investigator.

During the interview, Summer told Rhodes that her husband had been physically abusive toward all three children, but particularly toward a 14-year-old male child with autism and a 12-year-old female child.

According to Summer’s statement, her husband had repeatedly choked the male child about 100 times since 2024 and had beaten him with a belt and other objects. She also alleged he had struck the child in the head with a metal cup, punched him in the stomach, and pepper-sprayed him.

Summer also admitted that, at her husband’s direction, she had struck the children in the face with a belt. According to the affidavit, she told investigators she did not want to strike them and later told one of the children she had done so because she had to do what she was told by Scott.

She alleged the autistic male victim sometimes attempted to protect one of the female children from being beaten and was often then beaten himself.

Summer also told investigators her husband would grab one of the 12-year-old female victims by the hair, strike her in the face and grab her by the throat.

She further alleged that Scott forced her to use methamphetamine and sexually assaulted one of the 12-year-old female children. According to the affidavit, Summer said the child told her that Scott had been raping her. Wolfe-Ewing told investigators she did not know whether the child understood what the word meant and acknowledged that she did not question the child further about the allegation. According to the affidavit, another child also reportedly told Summer about alleged sexual abuse involving the 12-year-old.

Summer also alleged that Scott Ewing choked and slapped the third victim on July 21. She said an incident that began after Scott Ewing accused the 14-year-old child of not bathing properly escalated into several hours of violence against members of the household. According to her statement, the family left after Scott Ewing went to sleep and sought help.

Rhodes questioned Summer about why she had not left earlier or reported the alleged abuse. She said her husband would revoke access to joint debit or credit cards when the couple disagreed. She acknowledged, however, that she still had access to her personal bank cards.

Court records also show that Scott had been arrested approximately three weeks earlier for third-degree domestic battery and that a no-contact order had been issued. According to the affidavit, Summer later requested that the charge and order be dropped and returned to the residence with the children he had allegedly been abusing.

Summer went on to acknowledge that she had not reported the allegations of physical or sexual abuse to the Arkansas Child Abuse Hotline before July 23.

Following a safety assessment by the Arkansas Department of Human Services, all three children were placed in state custody.

The children were later interviewed at the Children’s Advocacy Center in Batesville. According to the affidavit, their statements corroborated portions of Summer’s account, including allegations that Scott Ewing directed her to strike them with a belt.

The interviews also yielded additional allegations against Summer from the children. According to the affidavit, investigators allege that Summer knew about the alleged sexual abuse of the 12-year-old female child and that she participated in it with her husband. The alleged sexual abuse reportedly began the previous summer and continued thereafter, according to the victim.

The children also reportedly told investigators they had repeatedly asked Summer to leave Scott, but were told they would all go to prison.

According to the report, all three children had extensive marks and bruising visible while wearing normal clothing at the time they were interviewed. Investigators said the injuries corroborated statements made during the investigation.

Summer Wolfe-Ewing was charged with one count of rape, a Class Y felony; three counts of permitting abuse of a minor, a Class B felony; first-degree domestic battery, a Class B felony; two counts of second-degree domestic battery under accomplice liability; three counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor; and three counts of third-degree domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor. Court records also allege accomplice liability for of the offenses.

The charges contained in court records are allegations. The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
