From Press Release and interview with Chief Monte Lane and court documents

Earlier this afternoon, Cherokee Village Police Chief Monte Lane provided an update on the Wed. Sept. 10 fatal shooting in Cherokee Village and this evening, he provided the name of the person killed in the home invasion.

Samuel West, 36, of 8 Wabbaseka Drive, near Katta Drive, where the incident took place, was the man who was shot and killed after breaking through the back glass and entering the home.

Chief Lane confirmed that the shooting was the result of West entering the home on Katta Drive.  He explained that the elderly homeowner first suspected the intruder, who entered, breaking through his back sliding glass door, was his wife who was due to be returning from church. When he heard a male voice, the homeowner went to his bedroom and retrieved a handgun. He then backed into a corner in the bedroom and shouted at West to stop. When West refused to do so and continually advanced toward the homeowner, he fired multiple shots at the intruder, killing him.

West was released from the Sharp County Detention Center at 12:25 p.m. on Sept. 10, the same day of the shooting. West was incarcerated for violation of a no-contact order against his estranged wife, who he filed for divorce from in June. Court records indicate West showed up on Sept. 9 at her home in Hardy to pick up the couple’s daughters when she suspected him of being under the influenece. She had previously filed an order of protection. Court records indicate West has a lengthy criminal history of drug and theft felonies back to 2009.

Cherokee Village Police Department, Sharp County Sheriff’s Department, and Arkansas State Police investigators were on the scene processing evidence until after midnight last night.

Chief Lane said the family has been notified. West’s body has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory.

No arrests have been made in the case and Lane said there will likely not be any as it was an apparent act of self defense.
